Do Hoka Run Small? Hoka Sizing Guide (2026)

Short answer: Hoka runs true to size in length for most runners. Fit differs by model, though: the Mach is snug, the Speedgoat is roomy. Measure your foot, read the chart below, and if you fall between two sizes, go up.

Why you read conflicting advice about Hoka

Search "do Hoka run small" and you will find two camps. US running stores say Hoka fits true to size, with a fairly generous toe box. Many trail runners say the opposite and buy a half size up.

Both are right, for three reasons:

• The model matters more than the brand. A Mach fits tighter than a Clifton, and a Speedgoat is wider than an Arahi.
• Distance matters. Feet swell over a marathon or a long trail run. Many runners add a half size for long distances, whatever the brand.
• EU sizes come in thirds. In Europe, Hoka labels sizes like 42 2/3. If you usually wear a 42.5 elsewhere, you land between two Hoka sizes.

What if you have wide feet?

Hoka offers wide versions (2E for men, D for women) of the Clifton, Bondi and Arahi. If your foot spills over the insole when you stand on it, go wide rather than sizing up. A shoe that is too long lets your foot slide and causes heel blisters.

Get it right in 2 minutes

1. Measure your foot in the evening, standing, heel against a wall, on a sheet of paper.
2. Keep the measurement of your longer foot.
3. Find it in the foot length column. Between two sizes, take the larger one.
4. Once laced, leave about a thumb's width in front of your longest toe.

Or let the StrideMatch app do it: the foot scan measures length and width with your phone and gives you the matching Hoka size. Full guide: what size running shoes should you get.

FAQ

Do Hoka run smaller than Nike? Not in length. For the same foot length, both land on the same US size. Differences come from the shape of each model.

Should I size up in Hoka? Only if you are between sizes, run long distances (marathon, ultra) or choose a snug model like the Mach.

Do Hokas need a break-in period? No. Your heel should feel locked in and your toes should move freely from the first run.

Does Hoka make wide shoes? Yes, on several models including the Clifton, Bondi and Arahi.
